Caring for Your Crockery: Tips for Keeping Your Dishes Beautiful

Crockery is an essential part of our dining experience, from cherished family heirlooms to everyday dishes. Well-cared-for crockery adds a touch of elegance to our tables and can last for generations with the right care. Whether your collection includes delicate bone china, hand-painted ceramics, or durable stoneware, here are some essential tips to keep your crockery looking its best.

Firstly, washing your crockery with care is crucial. While many modern pieces are dishwasher-safe, hand washing with a soft sponge and mild detergent is often gentler, particularly for vintage or fine bone china items. If using a dishwasher, place pieces securely to avoid clinking and use a gentle cycle. Avoid abrasive scrubbing, as this can scratch glazes and designs. For any stubborn stains, consider soaking dishes in warm water with a mild baking soda solution rather than scrubbing.

Storing crockery properly is another way to ensure its longevity. Plates and bowls should be stacked with liners or felt between them to prevent scratching, while cups and glasses are best stored upright to protect delicate rims. If space allows, store fragile or decorative pieces in a separate, secure cabinet to avoid accidental damage. Try to keep crockery in a cool, dry place, as prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can fade colours and weaken glazes.

Finally, pay attention to temperature changes. Thermal shock, or the rapid expansion and contraction due to heat, can cause cracks. Avoid placing hot dishes under cold water or moving crockery straight from the fridge to the oven. Similarly, don’t use fine china or ceramics in the microwave unless specified as safe. With a little extra care in washing, storing, and handling, your crockery can remain as beautiful as the day you brought it home, ready to enhance every dining occasion.
